Words can point the other way
Some words describe opposite ends of an idea. “Hot” and “cold” are different words, and they tell us about very different temperatures.
Why do opposites help?
When we compare two things, saying only “not hot” is unclear: it could be warm or cool. “Cold” gives a clearer idea, so opposites help us notice differences and choose accurately.
Find the opposite
Look at a cup of tea with steam rising. First, describe it as “hot”. Now touch an ice cube safely with a grown-up: “cold”. The two words compare the temperatures by pointing in opposite directions.
Not every difference is an opposite
It is easy to call two different things opposites, because both words are not the same. But “red” and “blue” are usually different colours, not opposite colours; opposites need two ends of one idea.
In everyday comparisons
Opposite words help when choosing clothes, finding a place or following instructions: open and closed, inside and outside, full and empty. They make a difference quick to understand.
