What agency means
Agency means the ability to make choices and take action, even when circumstances limit the options. A ruler, worker, child or group can all have agency, though they do not have equal power. History becomes fuller when you ask what people wanted, what they chose and how their actions affected events.
Why agency matters
Stories about kings, wars or inventions can make ordinary people seem invisible. The problem is that large changes are often carried out, resisted or reshaped by many people whose names never enter a textbook. Looking for agency helps explain both power and resistance: it shows who could decide, who had to obey and how people found ways to act.
Worked example: a school strike
Imagine factory children in 1880 asking for one day without work. Step one: identify the limit: employers and laws controlled their time. Step two: identify their choices: they could complain separately, leave, or act together. Step three: trace the result: a group stopping work could attract attention and pressure owners, even if it could also bring punishment. Their agency existed inside unequal power.
The trap: agency is not unlimited freedom
A reasonable mistake is to treat a person’s choice as proof that they were completely free. Hunger, law, violence, racism, age and lack of money can make some choices dangerous or impossible. Ask not only “What did they do?” but also “What alternatives could they really reach?” Agency is about real room for action, not unlimited control.
Agency in everyday decisions
This idea helps you read a biography or news story without reducing someone to a victim or a hero. You can notice the choices a person made, the limits around them and the other people affected. It also helps in group projects: a quiet person may have ideas and influence even without holding the loudest or most powerful role.
