A family timeline — History, 4–6 years
Events can be put in the order in which they happened. A family timeline makes earlier and later events easy to see.
Events in order
A timeline is a line that shows events from earlier to later. You can place a baby photo, a first day at school and a recent holiday on it, so the order of these moments is clear.
Why make a timeline?
When many memories are mixed together, it is easy to put them in the wrong order. Timelines were made to solve this problem: people could arrange journeys, family events or important dates and see how one came after another.
Making Mia’s timeline
Mia chooses three family events: her birth in 2019, moving house in 2022 and getting a bicycle in 2024. She writes the years from left to right: 2019, 2022, 2024. The birth comes first, the move comes next and the bicycle comes last.
The biggest picture is not first
A large photo may show an important event, but size does not tell you when it happened. A tiny baby photo can come before a large holiday photo. The useful clue is the date, or a careful question to someone who remembers.
Timelines in everyday life
Families use timelines to remember birthdays, trips and when a pet joined the home. Doctors, builders and gardeners also arrange events in order: an appointment, a job or a plant’s growth. The order helps people know what happened and what comes next.
