New machines, factories and power sources changed how many goods were made, where people worked and how towns grew.
Making goods with machines
Before industrialisation, many objects were made by hand in homes or small workshops. From the 1700s onwards, in some places, machines powered by water, steam and later electricity helped make goods in large factories. Work became faster, but often more controlled and repetitive.
The problem of making more goods
Growing towns and trade created demand for more cloth, tools and other goods. One person working by hand could make only a limited amount, so inventors and business owners sought ways to produce more quickly. This solved a supply problem for some people, while creating difficult working conditions for others.
From spinning wheel to factory
Imagine one person spinning wool at home and making 1 ball of yarn in a day. A water-powered machine might spin 20 balls in the same time. If ten machines worked in one factory, output could reach 200 balls a day. The factory made more yarn, but workers now followed the machine’s pace and schedule.
Machines did not improve everything at once
It is tempting to say that new machines simply made life better because they produced goods more cheaply and quickly. That thought is reasonable when we see the useful products today. At first, many factory workers faced long hours, low pay, accidents and crowded towns. Benefits and harm existed together.
Why an old factory matters today
An old factory, railway or mill can explain why a town grew in a particular place. Its buildings may now be a museum, homes or shops, while the town still has streets and jobs shaped by industry. Looking closely connects a familiar place with the work done there before.
