A vaccine gives the immune system a safe preview of a germ or part of it. The body can then respond faster if the real germ appears later.
A safe rehearsal
The immune system has cells that recognise unfamiliar signs and make antibodies or other defences. A vaccine shows it a harmless form, piece or instruction linked to a germ, without causing that illness in the usual way. Memory cells remain, ready to recognise the threat again.
Why rehearsal helps
The first immune response can take time, while an infection may grow during that delay. Vaccination was developed to prepare the body before that first dangerous encounter. It also helps reduce the chance that a germ spreads through a group, though no vaccine protects every person perfectly.
What happens after a vaccine
Suppose a vaccine shows the immune system a harmless piece linked to virus X. First, defence cells notice it and make a response. Next, some cells become memory cells. Months later, if virus X appears, those cells recognise its sign quickly and help launch defences sooner than in a first encounter.
The reasonable confusion
Some people think a vaccine must cause the full illness to work, because learning usually means experiencing the real thing. In fact, the immune system can practise with a safe signal. Mild soreness or tiredness after some vaccines is an immune response, not proof that the disease has been caught.
Protection in shared places
Vaccination matters in places where people mix, such as classrooms, buses and sports clubs. It protects the vaccinated person and can make it harder for an infection to reach someone who cannot receive a particular vaccine. Decisions about vaccines belong with families and health professionals, using reliable information.
