When mental health needs support — Health, 11–13 years

How to notice when difficult feelings or changes in behaviour are lasting, affecting life, and worth sharing with a trusted person.

Mental health can change

Mental health is how thoughts, feelings, body signals and relationships affect daily life. Everyone has difficult days, but a problem deserves attention when it lasts, keeps returning or makes school, sleep, friendships or basic tasks much harder. Needing support is not a character flaw; it is information that care may help.

Why speaking early helps

Feelings become harder to manage when they are hidden and carried alone. Telling a trusted adult creates another pair of eyes: they can listen, help with a practical change and connect someone to professional care. The problem this solves is not having a perfect explanation; it is stopping a growing difficulty from becoming more isolating or unsafe.

A first conversation

For three weeks, Noor has stopped enjoying friends, wakes often at night and struggles to start homework. Noor writes three facts: “three weeks”, “sleep is broken”, “schoolwork feels impossible”. Noor tells an aunt, “I don’t need you to fix it; I need you to listen and help me find support.” Together they contact a suitable adult or health professional.

The ‘I should cope’ trap

A common mistake is waiting until a problem is unbearable before telling anyone. It feels reasonable because other people may seem to cope, and asking for help can feel like losing control. But support is not a prize for reaching a crisis. Sharing early can make the next step smaller and safer.

Building a support route

Support can begin with a parent, relative, teacher, school counsellor, doctor or another safe adult. If the first person does not listen well, tell someone else; one unhelpful response does not prove the problem is unimportant. If someone may hurt themselves or is in immediate danger, stay with them and contact emergency help at once.
