An infection spreads when a germ reaches a new person in a way that lets it enter and multiply. Breaking any link in that chain—through hygiene, ventilation, staying home or vaccination—can reduce spread.

The chain of infection

Think of infection as a chain with links: a germ, a place where it lives, a way out, a route of travel, a way in, and a person who can become infected. The chain only works when the links connect. Breaking one link can stop or slow the journey.

Why prevention uses several steps

Germs do not spread through one single route. They may travel in droplets, on hands, through food, water or bites, so one rule cannot block every infection. Scientists use the chain idea to find the weakest link and choose a practical barrier instead of relying on guesswork.

A cough in a classroom

Imagine a person with a respiratory virus coughs into their hand, touches a desk, and another person touches it before touching their eyes. The links are virus, cough, hand, desk, fingers and eyes. Coughing into a tissue or elbow, washing hands and improving ventilation break different links and lower the chance of spread.

The clean-looking trap

A reasonable mistake is to think that something is safe because it looks clean, or that a quick rinse removes every germ. Most germs are too small to see, and different cleaning methods work in different situations. Washing hands with soap, for enough time, is more reliable than trusting your eyes.

Using the chain in real life

The chain helps you decide what to do at home, on public transport or when someone is ill. You might wash hands before eating, cover a cough, open a window or avoid sharing a bottle. These actions reduce risk; they cannot promise that nobody will ever become ill.
