Preventing and testing for STIs — Health, 14–17 years

How sexually transmitted infections spread, how barriers and testing reduce uncertainty, and why many infections have no obvious symptoms.

Reducing hidden risk

Sexually transmitted infections, or STIs, can pass through some sexual contact, and a person may have one without noticing symptoms. External or internal condoms and dental dams reduce contact with infected fluids or skin, while testing checks for specific infections. No method removes every risk, but several protections can work together.

Why symptoms are not enough

The problem is that waiting for pain, sores or unusual discharge misses many infections and can allow transmission or delayed treatment. Testing exists because the body is not a perfect alarm system. A test is chosen for a particular infection and timing; a healthcare service can explain when to test and what a result means.

A sensible testing plan

Imagine a condom breaks during sex and both people are worried. First, do not guess from symptoms or blame anyone; note when it happened and contact a sexual-health service. The service may discuss emergency contraception, HIV prevention, tests for particular STIs and when to repeat them. Until advice arrives, use barriers or pause sexual contact.

The symptom-free mistake

A common mistake is to think that someone looks healthy, so there is no STI risk, or that a positive result proves someone has been unfaithful. This feels logical because many everyday illnesses cause visible signs. STIs can be silent, and a result needs medical context; blame makes honest testing and care harder.

Care without stigma

This knowledge helps people choose protection, ask for testing and tell partners about a diagnosis without treating sexual health as a moral judgement. Clinics and pharmacies may offer confidential advice, depending on local rules. Treatment can protect health, but it does not make a person dirty or irresponsible for having an infection.
