How alcohol changes judgement and reaction — Health, 14–17 years

Alcohol affects the brain before a person necessarily looks drunk. It can slow reactions, weaken judgement and reduce coordination, making ordinary choices and risks harder to assess accurately.

A brake on brain networks

Alcohol changes communication between nerve cells, especially in brain networks used for attention, planning and movement. At first, a person may feel more relaxed or confident, while their accurate judgement is already weaker. Effects vary with amount, speed of drinking, body and context.

Why feeling confident can mislead

The problem is not only what alcohol does to muscles; it can also change the brain’s estimate of danger. Feeling less worried may seem like improved confidence, but it can remove useful caution at the same time. That combination helps explain risky choices, accidents and arguments.

A delayed braking decision

Suppose a cyclist notices a car 20 metres ahead and normally reacts in 0.8 seconds. At 18 km/h, the cyclist travels about 5 metres each second, so normal reaction distance is about 4 metres. If alcohol stretches reaction time to 1.6 seconds, the distance becomes about 8 metres before braking even starts.

Feeling fine is not a test

It is reasonable to trust your own feeling: if speech seems normal and you do not feel dizzy, you may think your reactions are normal too. But judgement and reaction can change before obvious signs appear, and a person affected may notice the change less clearly. Confidence cannot measure impairment.

Planning safer choices

This knowledge matters whenever a quick decision or good coordination is needed: cycling, swimming, crossing roads or caring for someone. A practical plan is to decide transport and trusted company before drinking is involved, and never ride or drive after alcohol. If someone is hard to wake or breathing strangely, get emergency help.
