Weather and climate — Geography, 11–13 years

Weather is what the atmosphere is doing now or soon; climate is the pattern of weather measured over many years.

Two time scales

Weather can change from sunny to rainy in one afternoon. Climate describes the usual pattern in a place, such as hot, wet summers or cold, dry winters, using observations collected over decades. A single day is weather, not a whole climate.

Why the difference matters

People need both short-term forecasts and long-term patterns. A forecast helps decide whether to carry an umbrella tomorrow; climate information helps choose crops, building materials or clothing for a region. Confusing them makes one unusual day seem like proof of a long-term pattern.

From readings to a climate

Imagine a station records July temperatures for 30 years. The July averages are 24, 25, 23, 26 and so on, while one particular July reaches 32°C every afternoon. The daily heat is weather; the 30-year average and pattern describe the climate.

The weather trap

A common mistake is to use today’s weather to judge a region’s climate. It feels reasonable because today is the evidence we can see directly. But climate needs many measurements, because natural variation can make one cold day happen in a generally warm place.

Weather and climate in life

Weather forecasts guide daily travel, sports and outdoor work. Climate knowledge helps farmers choose crops, engineers design for heat or heavy rain, and communities prepare for risks common in their region. Neither tells you exactly what every day will bring.
