How limited usable water affects people, farming, industry and decisions about sharing it.
The idea
Water scarcity happens when people do not have enough usable water for their needs, or cannot afford or reach it. It can result from a dry climate, pollution, overuse, poor pipes or rising demand. It is about supply and access together, not simply whether a place looks dry.
Why this matters
Geographers needed this idea because rainfall totals alone could not explain why some communities lack safe water. A rainy region may waste or pollute its supplies, while a dry region may manage water carefully and cope well. Studying scarcity reveals who uses water, who controls it and which choices create conflict.
A worked example
A village has 1,000 people and 1,000,000 litres of usable water for one year. Divide 1,000,000 by 1,000: that is 1,000 litres per person per year, or about 2.7 litres per day. If farming uses half the supply, homes and other needs share only 500,000 litres, so the same headline total hides a tighter shortage.
The common trap
A reasonable mistake is to think that water scarcity means there is no water at all. People naturally notice empty reservoirs and dry ground first. But scarcity can exist beside a river if its water is polluted, reserved for another use, lost through leaks or too expensive for local families.

Water scarcity guides decisions about reservoirs, recycling, crop choice, leak repairs and limits during droughts. Cities compare household, farm and factory demand before planning new supplies. You can use the idea at home by checking not only how long a tap runs, but where the water goes and whether it could be reused.
