What is a river basin?
A river basin is all the land where rainwater eventually flows into the same river, lake or sea. Ridges and hills form its edges, because water usually runs downhill away from them. A small stream can be part of a much larger basin.
Why use river basins?
People needed a way to predict where water, pollution or floods could travel. Political borders do not control flowing water, but a basin shows which places are connected by it. This helps communities share water and plan for floods, dams or dirty runoff.
Follow the water
Imagine a hill with a stream on each side. Rain falling on the west slope runs into Stream A; rain on the east slope runs into Stream B. The hilltop is the divide, and every patch of land draining to A belongs to A’s basin. A map can show this by tracing downhill.
The border is not political
A common mistake is to draw a basin using country or town borders. That feels sensible because those are the lines we see on many maps. But water ignores them: a river can cross several countries, while two nearby streets can belong to different basins if a ridge lies between them.
A basin in real life
When a factory spills oil into a stream, the pollution may travel through the whole downstream basin. Water managers therefore test water upstream and downstream, not just beside the factory. Farmers, towns and countries in one basin often need to make decisions together.
