A grid gives places an address
A grid divides a map into squares labelled along the edges. Instead of saying “the hill near the lake”, you can give the letters or numbers that identify its square. A four-figure reference locates one square; a six-figure reference estimates a position inside that square. The grid makes a shared, checkable answer possible.
Why order matters
The problem is that “12, 34” is useless if one person reads across first and another reads up first. Geographers agreed on a convention: read across the map first, then read up it, like moving along a corridor before climbing stairs. The order removes ambiguity, so someone else can find the same square without guessing.
Finding a six-figure position
A church lies in the square between eastings 32 and 33 and northings 47 and 48. First read across: 32. The church is about 6 tenths of the way to the next easting, so add 6. Then read up: 47. It is about 3 tenths of the way to the next northing, so add 3. Its six-figure reference is 326473.
Do not read up first
The usual mistake is reversing the two parts, because “up and across” sounds just as natural as “across and up”. That swap can place you in a completely different square, not merely a nearby spot. Say the rule aloud: along first, then up. For a six-figure reference, split it into three digits and three digits before plotting it.
A location others can find
Search-and-rescue teams, hikers and emergency services use grid references to share locations quickly. A person can radio “326473” even when there is no street name or phone signal. The reference is only useful with the correct map, grid and datum, so include those details when accuracy matters.
