The basic idea
Population density tells us how many people live in a given amount of land, usually one square kilometre. It helps us compare a small, crowded island with a large, sparsely settled country instead of looking only at the total population.
Why use it?
A total population can be misleading because countries and regions have very different areas. Geographers needed a fairer way to ask where pressure on housing, roads, water or farmland might be greatest. Density is useful, but it is an average: people are rarely spread evenly across the whole area.
A calculation
A district has 240,000 residents and covers 600 square kilometres. First, write the formula: density = population ÷ area. Then calculate 240,000 ÷ 600 = 400, so the district has an average density of 400 people per square kilometre. This does not mean every square kilometre contains exactly 400 people.
A tempting mistake
A common mistake is to call the country with the largest population the most densely populated. That feels reasonable because “more people” sounds like “more crowded”. But density also depends on area: a huge country may contain many people while still having plenty of open land.
Where it matters
Planners use density to estimate demand for schools, buses, hospitals, pipes and electricity networks. A map of density can also reveal why a city centre needs different services from a remote mountain area. Good decisions still need local detail, because an average cannot show every neighbourhood.
