How birth rates and death rates tend to change as societies gain safer water, healthcare, education and higher incomes.

The big idea

The demographic transition describes a common pattern of population change. At first, birth and death rates are both high; death rates then fall as living conditions improve, while births remain high for a time. Later, birth rates fall too, so population growth slows and the age structure becomes older.

Why this matters

The problem is explaining why populations can grow rapidly even after death rates improve. The model separates births from deaths and links them to social and economic change, rather than blaming population growth on one simple cause. It was developed from historical population data, but it is a pattern to test, not a timetable that every society must follow.

Following the rates

A country starts with 40 births and 35 deaths per 1,000 people: natural increase is 5 per 1,000. Later, deaths fall to 10 while births stay at 40, so natural increase becomes 30 per 1,000. In a later stage, births fall to 12 and deaths to 10, leaving growth at only 2 per 1,000, before migration is included.

The tempting mistake

A reasonable mistake is to treat the transition as a fixed four-step law and place every country neatly into one stage. The diagram encourages this because its curve looks orderly. Real populations can move unevenly, pause or differ between regions, and migration can change total population even when birth and death rates do not.

Where it is used

Planners use demographic-transition evidence to estimate future needs for schools, jobs, hospitals, housing and pensions. A youthful population may need classrooms and employment, while an ageing population may need healthcare and accessible transport. Forecasts are useful, but they must be updated when policies, crises or migration change the pattern.
