How waves reshape coasts, why some places erode faster than others, and how people decide whether to defend the shore.

The big idea

Waves move sediment along and away from a coast. Erosion removes material, while deposition builds beaches, spits and bars when water loses energy. Coastal management works by changing the balance between wave energy, sediment supply and the value people place on particular stretches of shore.

Why this matters

The problem is that a coast is both a moving natural system and a place where people build homes, ports and roads. A wall may protect one property but interrupt sediment movement and worsen erosion farther away. Studying coastal processes helps planners compare protection, adaptation and allowing the shoreline to move.

Reading a beach profile

A survey records beach width at three dates: 80 metres in 2000, 68 metres in 2010 and 50 metres in 2020. From 2000 to 2020, the beach lost 30 metres, or an average of 1.5 metres per year. The figures show erosion, but you would still check storms, sea walls and changes in sediment before claiming one cause.

The tempting mistake

A reasonable mistake is to assume that a sea wall solves erosion everywhere. It can reduce wave attack directly behind it, so the protection looks successful at first. However, it may reflect wave energy, narrow the beach and starve neighbouring areas of sediment; its effect must be measured along the whole shoreline.

Where it is used

Coastal engineers use this knowledge when planning groynes, beach nourishment, dunes and managed retreat. Councils may protect a town centre but allow low-value land to flood or erode, because every kilometre cannot be defended. The choice involves physical evidence as well as costs, habitats, access and fairness.
