A globe is a small Earth
Earth is a round planet, and a globe is a small model of it. It shows that places can be on different sides of the same world, even when we cannot see them from where we stand.
Why use a globe?
A flat picture is handy, but it can make a round Earth look stretched or cut at the edges. A globe keeps the round shape, so we can turn it and compare places all around the planet.
Finding two places on a globe
Put a sticker on Portugal and another on Japan. Turn the globe until Portugal faces you, then keep turning until Japan faces you. Both stickers stay on the same round Earth, even when one is hidden behind it.
The globe is not the real size
A child may think the places on a globe are tiny enough to be reached in a few steps. That is a reasonable thought because the model is small, but the globe shrinks the whole Earth; the real distances are much larger.
Seeing the world together
A globe is useful when planning a journey, learning where a country is, or noticing that oceans and land wrap around the planet. It gives a whole-Earth view before we look closely at one place.
