What a time zone is
Earth turns, so the Sun lights different places at different times. To keep clocks useful, the world is divided into broad time zones. Places in the same zone usually show the same clock time, although country borders and local decisions can make the real lines uneven.
Why do time zones exist?
Before shared time zones, towns often set clocks by the Sun, so nearby places could show different times. That became confusing when trains, telegraphs and travel connected places more closely. Time zones created a shared system: people in a region could plan journeys, work and messages without every town using its own clock.
Comparing two clocks
Suppose Lisbon is in a zone called UTC+0 and a city three zones east is UTC+3. If it is 10:00 in Lisbon, add three hours for the eastern city: 10:00 + 3 hours = 13:00. A video call planned for 10:00 in Lisbon would therefore begin at 13:00 there, unless a country’s local clock rule changes the result.
The common mix-up
Many people think every line between time zones follows a neat straight line, or that every country uses exactly one zone. That seems reasonable because a globe can be divided into equal slices. In reality, borders, islands and daylight-saving decisions bend the clock rules. Use a current time-zone source when an exact time matters.
Time zones in daily life
Time zones matter when families call relatives abroad, teams play online, or aircraft cross the world. They also help explain why a morning flight can arrive when the local clock says a different hour. People check the destination’s local time so they do not call at night or miss a meeting.
