English Year 3: Numbers to 50, days and months
English, Year 3 (Portugal): Count to fifty, say the days and the months, and do little sums in English.
Counting to fifty
Learn the numbers in groups. From 1 to 12 the words are new: one, two, three … twelve. From 13 to 19 add “-teen”: “thirteen” (13), “fourteen” (14) … “nineteen” (19). Then the tens: “twenty” (20), “thirty” (30), “forty” (40), “fifty” (50). In between, join the words with a hyphen: “twenty-one” (21), “thirty-five” (35).
Numbers are everywhere
Numbers are in your age, your phone, the bus, the prices and the dates. In maths class you can also do sums in English: “plus”, “minus” and “is”. “Seven plus five is twelve.” The more you use numbers in English, the faster you say them.
A sum in English, step by step
Your teacher says: “Twenty plus fifteen is …?” Step 1: write it with digits: 20 + 15. Step 2: add: 20 + 10 = 30, then 30 + 5 = 35. Step 3: say it: “Twenty plus fifteen is thirty-five.” Step 4: write the number in words, with a hyphen: thirty-five.
Thirteen or thirty?
Some numbers sound almost the same! “-teen” is a long, strong ending: thir-TEEN (13), four-TEEN (14). “-ty” is short and soft: THIR-ty (30), FOR-ty (40). And watch the spelling: 4 is “four”, 14 is “fourteen”, but 40 is “forty”, with no “u”. Listen to the ending and check the spelling.
Days, months and birthdays
Say the days: “Monday, Tuesday … Sunday”. Say the months: “January, February … December”. In English, days and months start with a capital letter: “My birthday is in May.” Use numbers for your age, your phone, the bus number and prices, and count things in the classroom: “ten pencils”.
