A prototype turns an idea into something that can reveal what drawings and calculations missed.
Learning from a first version
A prototype is an early version made to learn, not necessarily the final product. It lets people handle the design, measure it and try realistic tasks. The point is to discover useful evidence while changes are still possible and affordable.
Why test something real
Drawings cannot show every awkward grip, noisy movement or unexpected failure. Prototyping grew from the need to find such problems before many identical products were made. A test turns a guess into evidence, provided the test represents the conditions that matter.
Testing a phone stand
A stand should hold a 200 g phone at a 60° angle for 10 minutes. The first prototype holds it for 3 minutes before sliding. The team adds a rubber pad, repeats the same test three times, and gets 10, 10 and 10 minutes. The change is supported by the test, though longer use still needs checking.
A pass is not proof of perfection
A tempting mistake is to stop after one successful test. That feels fair because the requirement was met, but one result may be lucky or may miss another condition. Repeat tests, vary sensible conditions and record failures as carefully as successes; they show what must improve.
Prototypes beyond school
A medical-device team may test a handle with users before making a sterile version. A car company tests a new dashboard for visibility and reach, while a software team tests a screen with people before release. In each case, observed behaviour can change the design.
