A model leaves out some reality so that a design can be predicted, calculated or tested before full construction.
A useful simplification
An engineering model is a focused version of a real thing. It might be a drawing, a computer simulation, a small bridge or an equation. It keeps the features that matter for one question and ignores details that would make that question harder to see.
Why model first
Building the full object first can waste materials, time and money, especially when failure is dangerous. Engineers have long used sketches, scale models and calculations to explore ideas before committing to them. A model is not a promise that reality will behave exactly the same; it is evidence with stated limits.
Scaling a bridge model
A bridge is 30 m long, and a model uses a scale of 1:100. Divide the real length by 100: 30 m ÷ 100 = 0.30 m, or 30 cm. The model represents the length correctly, but its weight and material behaviour are not automatically realistic; those need separate checks.
A model is not the object
People often trust a model too much because its neat result looks precise. That is reasonable: a computer screen or a clean equation hides uncertainty. But every model makes assumptions, such as ignoring air resistance or treating a material as uniform. Ask what was left out before trusting the answer.
Models in real engineering
Before a new aircraft flies, teams use wind-tunnel models and computer models to study lift and drag. Architects model sunlight in a building, and electronics engineers simulate a circuit before making a board. In each case, the model answers a limited question and is checked against measurements.
