The best design balances goals
An engineering design must satisfy several needs at once: it may need to be safe, cheap, light, strong and easy to repair. Improving one quality often makes another worse. The design is successful when its balance fits the real situation.
Why trade-offs matter
Real projects have limited money, materials, time and energy. If a team only maximises one target, the result may be too expensive, too heavy or unsafe. Thinking in trade-offs grew from solving practical problems where no single choice was perfect.
A bicycle rack choice
A rack must hold 20 kg, cost under €40 and weigh under 3 kg. Rack A costs €30 and weighs 2 kg but holds 15 kg; Rack B costs €38, weighs 2.8 kg and holds 25 kg. A fails the load requirement, so B is the workable choice.
The cheapest is not always best
It is tempting to call the cheapest option the best because price is easy to compare. But a cheap part that breaks quickly may cost more through repairs, danger or replacement. Price is one constraint, not the whole design.
Where trade-offs appear
Phone designers balance battery life, thickness, camera quality and price. City planners balance road space, walking, public transport and housing. In both cases, the question is not which feature is greatest, but which combination serves the people using it.
