A wide base makes things steadier — Engineering, 4–6 years

Objects are less likely to tip when their weight is supported over a wide area. This helps us understand why towers, tables, and some toys need a firm, well-spread base.

Standing steady

A thing is stable when it can stay standing while a small push or movement happens. A wide bottom gives its weight more room to rest, so it is harder to tip. A tall thing with a narrow bottom is easier to knock over.

Why do legs need support?

Tables, towers, and chairs carry weight above the ground. If that weight leans too far beyond the supporting feet, the object tips. Builders have long needed things to stand safely, so they use broad bases, several feet, or supports that spread the load.

Two block towers

Build one tower with a single narrow block at the bottom and three blocks above it. Build another with two blocks side by side at the bottom and the same three above. Give each tower the same gentle tap. The tower with the wider base is more likely to stay standing.

“Taller means stronger”

A tall tower can look impressive, so it is easy to think it must be strong. Height alone does not stop tipping: a narrow base and a small push can make the top swing past the feet. Check the bottom as well as the top when judging a structure.

Tables, signs, and umbrellas

A table needs feet spread under it so it does not rock. A sign needs a firm base, and a parasol needs a heavy stand because wind can push it. These objects use the same simple idea: support the weight over a useful area.
