Triangles strengthen frames — Engineering, 4–6 years

A square frame can wobble, but a triangle keeps its three corners at fixed distances. Builders use this shape when a frame must hold its form.

Triangles hold their shape

Join three straight pieces at their ends and you get a triangle. If the pieces keep the same lengths, the three corners cannot easily slide into a different shape. Four pieces make a square, which can lean sideways unless another piece supports it.

Why add diagonal supports?

A frame for a roof, bridge or tower must not twist when wind, weight or movement pushes it. A square alone can change into a slanted shape, so builders add a diagonal piece and make two triangles. This idea came from noticing that some shapes stay firm while others wobble.

Bracing a square frame

Make a square from four craft sticks and gently push its top corner sideways. The square leans. Tape a fifth stick diagonally from the bottom-left corner to the top-right corner; push again. The diagonal makes two triangles, so the frame keeps its shape much better.

Not every triangle is strong

It is easy to think that simply seeing a triangle makes a structure safe. A triangle is useful only when its joints and pieces are strong enough, and when it is fixed in the right place. A loose joint can still wobble, even inside a triangular frame.

Triangles in real structures

Look for triangular supports in roof frames, cranes, playground climbing frames and some bridges. The pieces share pushes and pulls while helping the structure keep its shape. Engineers choose other shapes too, but triangles are useful where bending must be limited.
