Materials behave differently — Engineering, 4–6 years

Wood, paper, metal, plastic, and fabric each have useful qualities. Choosing a material means thinking about what an object must do, not just what it looks like.

What can this material do?

Materials are the stuff objects are made from, and they do not all act in the same way. Paper can be folded, rubber can stretch, glass can be clear, and wood can be stiff. Engineers choose a material whose qualities suit the job.

Why choose one material over another?

An object may need to be strong, bendy, light, waterproof, or easy to see through. No single material is best at everything, so choosing the wrong one can make a thing break, leak, or feel too heavy. Engineers compare materials with the job in mind.

A rain cover

Suppose a toy house needs a roof for a rainy day. Test a sheet of paper, a piece of fabric, and a plastic bag by putting a few drops of water on each. The paper becomes soggy, fabric may let water through, and plastic keeps water out, so plastic suits this job best.

“The prettiest material is best”

A shiny or colourful material can look like the nicest choice. That is reasonable because we notice appearance first, but looks do not tell us whether it is strong, waterproof, or safe. Test the quality needed for the job before choosing.

Why raincoats and windows differ

A raincoat needs to keep water out while bending as a person moves, so waterproof flexible fabric is useful. A window needs to let light through while staying hard and flat, so clear glass or plastic is useful. Each material is chosen for the work it must do.
