Counterweights help balance — Engineering, 4–6 years
A counterweight is a weight placed on the other side to make lifting or holding something easier.
A helpful weight
Sometimes a heavy part is easier to move when another weight balances it. That second weight is a counterweight. It does not make the heavy part disappear; it makes the whole object less likely to tip and easier to control.
Why add weight?
A tall object, a lifting arm or a door can tip when one side pulls down. People began using a weight on the other side to stop that tipping. The problem is not always too much weight; sometimes the weight is in the wrong place.
Balancing a toy crane
A toy crane has a long arm with a 3-block load at the front. First, put 3 blocks at the back of the arm. The arm now has a weight on each side, so it is less likely to tip. If the front load grows to 4 blocks, add or move weight at the back and test gently.
More weight is not always better
It is tempting to add a very heavy object whenever something tips. That makes sense because weight feels powerful, but too much can break the arm or make the whole object hard to move. The position of the counterweight matters as well as its size.
Where counterweights appear
You can find counterweights in cranes, lift doors and some bridges that open for boats. A counterweight also helps a heavy lid stay open instead of falling. These devices are designed so a person needs less force to move them safely.
