A path over a gap
A bridge is a built path that goes over something we cannot simply walk across, such as water, traffic or a deep dip in the ground. It carries people, animals or vehicles from one side to the other.
Why build a bridge?
Without a bridge, people might need to take a long way round, get wet or wait for a boat. Engineers make a strong path when a useful route is blocked by a gap, so crossing becomes safer and quicker.
Crossing a stream
A stream is 2 metres wide, and the stepping stones are slippery. First, put two firm supports on opposite banks. Next, place a board across them and check that it does not wobble. Now one person can cross carefully without stepping into the water.
It looks strong
A board can look thick and strong but still bend or slide when someone steps on it. This is a reasonable mistake because our eyes notice size before they notice hidden support. Engineers check both the parts and what holds them up, rather than trusting appearance alone.
Bridges in everyday life
You may cross a bridge on foot, by bicycle, car or train. Some bridges carry water in pipes, and others let animals pass safely under or over a road. Each one is shaped for its gap and for what it must carry.
