Idea
Engineering starts with a need: move something, hold something up, keep something dry or make a task easier. You imagine several answers, choose materials, build a small version and test it, then change what did not work.
Why it matters
A first idea often looks good but bends, breaks, costs too much or is difficult to use. The cycle exists because guessing once is less reliable than making a fair test, noticing evidence and improving the design step by step.
Worked example
A team must make a paper bridge hold 20 coins. First they measure a 30-centimetre gap and sketch three shapes. They build a flat bridge, but it holds only 8 coins; folds make it stiffer, so the second bridge holds 24. They record both tests and keep the stronger design.
A common trap
It is tempting to build the first idea quickly and call it finished when it works once. That feels reasonable because success is exciting, but one test may be luck; changing one feature at a time and testing again shows what really helped.
Where it is used
The same pattern is used to design playgrounds, bicycles, phones, buildings and ways to save energy. People first ask what the user needs, then make prototypes and improve them; the finished object is usually the result of many earlier versions.
