How ocean currents move heat — Earth science, 14–17 years

Ocean water moves in large patterns driven by wind, Earth’s rotation, temperature and salt. These currents redistribute heat and affect nearby climates without controlling every weather event.

What an ocean current is

An ocean current is a sustained movement of seawater in a fairly consistent direction. Surface currents are pushed mainly by winds, while deep currents are strongly affected by differences in temperature and salinity. Together, these movements form a connected circulation that carries water and energy around the planet.

Why currents redistribute heat

Without ocean circulation, tropical regions would keep more of the Sun’s heat and high latitudes would receive less from elsewhere. Currents developed as a way to understand this uneven heating and its effects. Warm currents can soften nearby winters; cold currents can cool coasts and influence fog, clouds and rainfall.

Worked example: the Gulf Stream

Suppose a parcel of warm water moves north at 0.5 metres per second. In one day it travels 43,200 metres, because 0.5 × 86,400 = 43,200, or 43.2 kilometres. The current carries heat from lower latitudes toward the North Atlantic. Winds and the ocean’s shape help steer it, while the heat it releases affects nearby air.

Trap: a current is not a river

A map often draws an ocean current as a narrow arrow, so it is reasonable to imagine a river flowing through the sea. In reality, currents can be hundreds of kilometres wide, change speed and mix with surrounding water. An arrow shows the main movement, not a solid-sided channel with one exact temperature.

Currents in real decisions

Ocean currents matter to shipping, fisheries, coastal weather forecasts and marine ecosystems. Fishers use current maps to understand where nutrients and fish may concentrate, while ships plan routes around speed and safety. Currents do not predict one person’s weather exactly, but they are part of the larger system behind coastal conditions.
