Testing reveals what really happens, and iteration means changing the design and trying again.

Learn, change, repeat

Testing means giving a design a fair try and observing what happens against its criteria. Iteration is the cycle of changing one or more parts, testing again and using the evidence to guide the next version. The aim is not to defend the first idea, but to make the result work better.

Why test with evidence?

A designer’s prediction can be wrong, even when it feels convincing. People may use an object differently, a material may bend or an instruction may confuse them. Testing replaced guesswork with evidence: it shows the gap between what you expected and what actually happened, so the next decision is wiser.

Worked example: improving a paper bridge

Make a paper bridge between two books, 20 cm apart, and place coins in its centre. A flat sheet holds 3 coins before bending. Fold a second sheet into a wide zigzag, then test it in the same place: it holds 8 coins. The fair comparison changed the shape, kept the gap and measured the same result.

The trap: changing everything at once

If you change the material, size and shape together, a better result cannot tell you which change helped. This mistake is reasonable because several improvements seem faster than testing one at a time. For useful learning, keep important conditions the same and change a part you can identify.

Where it appears

Websites are tested with people who try to find a button, and games are adjusted after players report confusion or boredom. Engineers test safer car parts, while gardeners try different watering methods and observe the plants. Iteration is useful when real behaviour matters more than a confident guess.
