Learn how designers make parts and objects the right size in relation to one another, whether they are drawing a room, making a model or planning a poster.
What scale and proportion do
Scale compares the size of a drawing or model with the real thing. Proportion compares the sizes of parts within the same design, such as a door, a wall and a window. Good relationships make the result believable and easy to use.
Why size relationships matter
Designers use scale because a real object may be too large to draw, carry or build all at once. They use proportion because parts that are too small, large or crowded can make an object confusing or uncomfortable. These ideas turn a big plan into something people can judge.
A model bedroom
A bedroom is 4 metres long and 3 metres wide. Choose a scale of 1 centimetre for each metre: draw a rectangle 4 cm by 3 cm. A 2-metre bed becomes 2 cm long, and a 1-metre desk becomes 1 cm, so every part keeps the same relationship.
The common mix-up
A common mistake is shrinking one part but not the others. It feels reasonable because we often focus on the most noticeable object, such as a car in a street drawing. But a tiny person beside a huge door, or a giant chair beside a small table, changes what the whole scene means.
Where it appears
You meet scale in maps, model kits, floor plans and diagrams of machines. Proportion appears when an architect sizes windows, when a toy maker shapes a figure, or when you adjust text and pictures on a poster. In each case, relationships help people understand the object.
