Design constraints — Design, 14–17 years
Good design is not limitless choice. It works within clear limits such as time, cost, size, safety or available materials.
What a constraint does
A constraint is a limit that a design must respect. It may come from the user, the law, the budget, the materials, or the place where the object will be used. Constraints do not simply block ideas: they help decide which ideas are possible.
Why limits matter
Without constraints, a design can sound impressive but fail in real life. A product may be too expensive, too heavy, unsafe, or impossible to make. Naming the limits early turns a vague challenge into a problem that can be solved and checked.
Worked example: a bike light
A rear bike light must cost under €12, weigh under 150 g, survive rain, and run for 8 hours. A first design costs €15 and lasts 5 hours, so it fails two constraints. Replacing the expensive casing and using a lower-power LED brings the cost to €10 and the running time to 9 hours.
The more features trap
A common mistake is to add features whenever an idea seems weak. This feels reasonable because more functions can sound like more value. But each feature may add cost, weight, confusion, or a new way to fail, so a simpler design may meet the real constraints better.
Where constraints appear
Constraints shape phones, trainers, furniture, buildings, websites, and public transport. An architect must work with a site and safety rules; a game designer works with a device’s memory and controls. Recognising the limits helps you judge a design fairly instead of asking only whether it looks exciting.
