Making structures stable — Design, 7–10 years

A structure must carry forces without falling, twisting or bending too much. Shapes and wide supports can make a big difference.

Balance and support

A stable structure keeps its shape and stays where it should. It usually has a wide enough base, supports in sensible places and parts that do not bend too easily. The centre of its weight matters too: if too much weight is high or outside the base, it can tip.

Why structures fall

The problem is that gravity pulls every object down, while pushes and pulls can make it lean or twist. People learned to solve this when building shelters, bridges and towers that had to stay up. Designers use shapes such as triangles and strong joints because they spread forces instead of letting one part move alone.

Strengthening a paper tower

A paper tower is 40 centimetres tall but wobbles when you place a 100-gram book on top. First, you widen its base with four folded feet. Next, you roll the paper into tubes instead of leaving it flat. Finally, you add diagonal strips between the sides. Each change gives the tower better support against tipping and bending.

More parts means stronger

A reasonable mistake is adding many sticks or layers and assuming the structure must become stronger. More material can help, but badly placed parts add weight, weak joints and extra ways to wobble. Look for the force causing the problem, then add support where it is needed.

Stable things around you

Chairs, shelves, playground frames and bicycles all depend on stability. A chair needs legs that spread its weight, and a shelf needs supports that stop it from bending or pulling away from the wall. When you see a structure, notice its base, joints and the direction of the forces.
