Useful data can also reveal people, so collecting and sharing it requires care about identity, purpose and consent.

What privacy means in data

Personal data are details that identify someone directly or when combined, such as a name, phone number, exact location or unique health record. Anonymisation removes or changes identifying details, but it must be strong enough that a person cannot easily be recognised again. Privacy is about controlling harmful or unwanted use, not hiding every fact.

Why privacy became a data problem

Digital systems can copy, combine and search information at a huge scale. A harmless-looking detail, such as a birthday or postcode, can identify someone when joined with other records. Privacy rules and anonymisation grew from the problem of gaining useful knowledge without exposing people to tracking, embarrassment, discrimination or fraud.

A worked example

A school wants to publish results for 120 students. First, remove names, student numbers and exact dates of birth. Second, report age groups and results in groups of at least 10, such as 18 students averaging 72%. Third, check combinations: if only one 16-year-old in a small class took the test, that summary may still identify them.

The trap: removing names is not enough

It is tempting to call a file anonymous once names are deleted. But rare combinations—such as a postcode, age and unusual job—can point to one person. This mistake is reasonable because a name feels like the whole identity; in data, several ordinary clues can become identifying when joined together.

Where it is used

Apps, schools, hospitals and online shops collect data to provide services or improve them. A careful organisation collects only what it needs, explains the purpose, protects the records and does not quietly reuse them for a different purpose. You can ask what is collected, why it is needed and who can access it.
