Sometimes we want to know which answer appears most often. Finding it gives a quick picture of what is usual in a group, without saying that every person agrees.
The answer seen most often
The most common answer is the one we see more times than any other answer. We can find it by looking at the answers and counting each kind. It tells us what happens most often in this group, not what happens every time or what everyone chooses.
Why look for the most common?
This solves the problem of describing a whole group with one simple answer. If we want to choose one snack for a party, the most common choice may be a useful clue. People use this idea because a busy list of answers is hard to remember, while the answer seen most often is easy to notice.
Example: games
Five children choose a game: chase, blocks, chase, drawing, chase. We look at each kind and count: chase appears 3 times, blocks 1 time and drawing 1 time. Chase is the most common answer because its count is bigger than every other count.
The tempting mistake
A reasonable mistake is to choose the answer that comes first, or the one we like best. Our eyes and feelings notice familiar things quickly. But “most common” is about the number of times an answer appears, so we must count before choosing.
Where it is useful
A café can notice the most common drink order, and a library can notice which books are borrowed most often. A family might use the most common shoe size when sharing spare slippers. This clue helps with planning, but unusual choices still matter too.
