Idea
A network is a group of connected devices that can exchange information. A router is a traffic director: it reads the destination on a message and sends it towards the right network, rather like a post office choosing the next stop. Your device usually reaches a distant service through several routers, not one giant direct cable.
Why
If every device needed a separate cable to every other device, a growing network would become a tangled, expensive mess. Routers solve the problem by joining smaller networks and forwarding traffic between them. They can also choose another route when one connection is busy or broken, which keeps communication possible.
Worked example
Suppose your tablet asks for a video. First, your home router sees that the destination is outside your home network. Second, it sends the request to your internet provider’s router. Third, another router sends it towards the video service. The reply travels back through routers until your home router delivers it to the tablet.
Common trap
It is natural to imagine that the internet is one enormous machine with one central switch. In reality, it is many networks owned and managed by different organisations, linked together. That is why a local Wi-Fi problem can stop your access even when the distant website itself is working perfectly.
Where it appears
Routers are inside homes, schools, offices and data centres. They connect laptops, consoles and phones to nearby networks, then connect those networks to services such as video calls, games and websites. When a video call freezes, a route may be crowded, the Wi-Fi link weak, or the service itself overloaded.
