Everyone needs care and safety — Civics, 4–6 years

People share basic needs, such as safety, water, food, rest and care, even though they may have different wishes.

Needs come before wishes

A need is something your body or mind requires to be safe and well, such as water, food, sleep, shelter or care. A wish is something you would like, such as a new toy or a particular colour. Everyone has needs, even when their wishes are very different.

Why communities care

One person cannot always provide everything needed for a safe life. Families, neighbours and public services help people get water, food, shelter, care and protection. Communities developed this cooperation because people are stronger and safer when they look after one another.

When someone is thirsty

Marta is playing outside on a warm day and says she is thirsty. First, an adult stops the game and checks what she needs. Marta gets drinking water, sits in the shade and rests. The choice of a drink comes after the basic need for safe water and rest.

A wish can feel urgent

A common mistake is to call everything we really want a need. The feeling is understandable: wanting a toy can make us think about it very strongly. A need keeps someone safe or well; a wish may be important to us, but waiting for it does not usually cause harm.

Noticing needs in daily life

At home, notice whether someone needs food, quiet, warmth, medicine or a kind word. In a group, making space for a tired person or finding water for someone thirsty is civic care. We can notice needs without guessing everything: ask, listen and get help when necessary.
