Reading the periodic table — Chemistry, 11–13 years

The periodic table is a map of the elements. Its position gives clues about what an element is like and how it may behave.

A map with patterns

The periodic table arranges all the known elements in a pattern. Elements in the same column often have similar behaviour, while moving across a row changes their properties step by step. The symbols and numbers help us identify each element.

Why make a table?

Chemists needed a way to organise many elements and predict ones not yet discovered. Earlier lists became confusing because they did not show the repeating patterns. The table turns scattered facts into a useful structure for asking questions and making predictions.

Finding chlorine

Find chlorine, Cl, in the table. Its atomic number is 17, so one neutral chlorine atom has 17 protons and 17 electrons. Cl is in group 17, where elements often react strongly, and in period 3, so it has three occupied electron levels.

The table is not a shopping list

A common mistake is to think that nearby elements must behave almost the same. Their positions show patterns, but each element still has its own properties; sodium and magnesium are next to each other yet react differently. Similarity is a clue, not a guarantee.

Choosing useful materials

Scientists use the table when choosing materials for batteries, medicines, buildings and electronics. They can compare elements in a group and test the most promising ones. It does not tell the whole story, but it helps narrow the search before experiments begin.
