Small patterns of atoms give organic molecules their characteristic reactions and properties.

The reactive patch

A functional group is a small, recognisable arrangement of atoms attached to a carbon skeleton. It behaves like a reactive patch: an –OH group often makes an alcohol, while a –COOH group makes a carboxylic acid, even when the rest of the molecule changes.

Why chemists use them

Naming a whole organic molecule every time can hide the feature that controls its reactions. Functional groups let chemists predict behaviour and organise related substances, much as recognising a handle tells you how an object may be held without describing every mark on it.

Finding the alcohol group

Look at ethanol, CH₃CH₂OH. First split the formula into CH₃, CH₂ and OH. The final –OH is the hydroxyl group, so ethanol belongs to the alcohol family; the two-carbon part changes its size, but the –OH helps explain its characteristic reactions.

One group is not the whole molecule

It is tempting to assume that every molecule with –OH behaves exactly like ethanol. The group matters, but the carbon skeleton also affects solubility, boiling point and reaction speed. A longer chain can make an alcohol less soluble in water, even though it still has –OH.

Designing useful molecules

Functional groups help scientists design medicines, perfumes, solvents and cleaning products with chosen properties. Changing one group can alter smell or solubility, but real design also checks toxicity, stability and how the complete molecule behaves.
