Chemistry is also about using substances safely. A symbol or warning on a bottle gives information before we touch, smell or use what is inside.
Warnings are information
A cleaning product, medicine or glue may look like an ordinary liquid or paste, but its ingredients can affect our bodies. Safety labels use words and pictures to tell us about dangers and the careful actions needed.
Why do bottles need warnings?
We cannot always tell what a substance can do just by looking at it. Warnings solve that problem: they help people avoid swallowing, splashing or mixing something that could harm them.
Reading one bottle
Imagine finding a bottle with a picture of a hand being damaged and the words ‘keep away from skin’. First, stop and do not touch it. Next, show the label to an adult, who can follow its instructions and store it safely.
Never trust looks alone
It is reasonable to think a clear liquid is water because many harmless drinks look clear. But dangerous liquids can look, smell or feel ordinary, so we never taste an unknown substance or guess its safety from appearance.
At home and outside
You may see warning symbols on bathroom cleaners, paints, batteries and some garden products. The useful habit is simple: ask an adult, read the label together, and keep products in their original containers.
