A layered defence
Your immune system is a network that notices and responds to things that do not belong in your body. Skin and mucus form outer barriers; inside, cells and chemicals attack or contain invaders. After some infections or vaccinations, immune memory can make a later response faster, although no defence works against everything.
Why defence needs layers
A single barrier cannot stop every threat: skin can be cut, and some particles enter through the nose or mouth. Layered defence solves this problem by slowing invaders first and then removing those that get through. Vaccination adds a safe preview of a germ, helping memory cells prepare without requiring the full disease.
A second encounter
Imagine a germ enters on Monday. The first immune response may take several days to recognise it and build enough defenders, so symptoms can appear. If the same germ enters months later, memory cells recognise its markers quickly and help make many defenders sooner. The result may be milder illness, but it is not a promise of zero symptoms.
The common mix-up
It is easy to think that a strong immune system should never let you feel ill. That seems logical because symptoms are unpleasant, but fever, swelling and tiredness can be signs of the defence response itself. Immunity lowers risk or severity; it does not make a person invulnerable, and different germs require different responses.
Where it shows up
Vaccines train immune memory before a dangerous infection arrives. Soap and clean water help remove microbes before they cross the body's barriers, while a plaster protects a cut as skin repairs itself. Doctors use this knowledge to choose vaccines, treat infections and manage allergies, which are defence responses aimed at harmless triggers.
