The immune response: recognising threats — Biology, 14–17 years
The immune system must attack harmful invaders while limiting damage to the body’s own cells. It uses barriers, cells and molecules that recognise clues from pathogens and build targeted responses.
A defence with memory
The immune system distinguishes many molecular patterns and responds to what may be harmful. Innate defences act quickly and broadly; adaptive lymphocytes make a more specific response. Some long-lived cells remember a pathogen, making a later response faster.
Why recognition matters
A defence that attacked everything would damage the body, while a defence that attacked nothing would fail against infection. Recognition helps the immune system choose a target and coordinate the response. This also explains why harmless substances or the body’s own cells can sometimes be targeted by mistake.
Worked example: vaccination
A vaccine presents the immune system with a safe form or fragment of a pathogen. For example, after a measles vaccine, selected lymphocytes multiply and some become memory cells. If the real virus later appears, antibodies and cells can respond sooner, reducing the chance of severe disease.
Trap: antibodies destroy everything
It is reasonable to picture antibodies as tiny weapons that kill any germ they touch. They are actually proteins that bind particular shapes, marking targets or blocking them; other immune cells often do the destroying. A matching antibody may be useless against a different pathogen.
Use: testing and treating infection
Doctors can use immune clues in diagnosis. A test may detect pathogen material, antibodies or immune cells, but each result has a time window and can need interpretation. Treatments then target the cause or support the body; antibiotics, for instance, work on some bacteria, not viruses.
