The human microbiome — Biology, 14–17

Microorganisms living on and inside you form communities that can affect digestion, immunity and chemical signals. The key is to separate evidence about association from proof that one microbe causes a disease.

An ecosystem carried by a person

Your skin, mouth and gut host communities of bacteria, archaea, fungi and viruses. Together, their genes and activities are called the microbiome. They are not all helpful or harmful: some are harmless, some compete with pathogens, and some can cause trouble if they reach the wrong place or the community changes.

Why study these tiny communities?

For a long time, biology treated microbes mainly as causes of disease. Researchers then found that many microbes help break down food, make useful molecules or train immune cells. Studying the whole community solves a bigger problem than naming one germ: health can depend on interactions among many species and on the environment around them.

What a microbiome comparison shows

Suppose a study finds bacterium X in 70% of people with a condition but only 35% of a comparison group. The association is real in that sample: 70 divided by 35 equals 2, so X was twice as common. But this does not prove X caused the condition; diet, medicine or another microbe might explain both results.

The reasonable mistake

People often hear that a microbe is “linked to” a disease and conclude that it causes it. That leap is understandable because causes and warning signs are both described as connections. Yet a changed microbiome may be an effect of illness, treatment or diet. To test cause, researchers need stronger evidence, such as controlled experiments and repeated results.

Where it appears

Microbiome research influences advice about antibiotics, diet and some treatments, including carefully screened faecal microbiota transplants for particular intestinal infections. Commercial tests and supplements often make bigger promises than the evidence supports. If you encounter one, ask which microbes were measured, whether the study shows causation and whether the result applies to people like you.
