Biodiversity sampling: estimating what lives somewhere — 14–17
You cannot count every organism in a forest, pond or beach. Careful samples, repeated in several places, can estimate which species are present and how common they are without pretending to know more than the evidence shows.
A small sample can reveal a larger pattern
Sampling means studying selected parts of a habitat and using them to estimate the whole. Good sampling gives every part a fair chance of being chosen, records methods clearly and includes enough repeats to reveal variation.
Why not count everything?
The problem is scale: habitats can be huge, organisms can hide, and counting can disturb them. Sampling makes fieldwork possible, but it only works if you avoid convenient spots, repeat measurements and state how confident the estimate is.
Estimating daisies in a field
Place ten 1 m² quadrats at random and count 8, 11, 9, 12, 10, 7, 13, 10, 9 and 11 daisies. The mean is 100 ÷ 10 = 10 daisies per square metre. In a 600 m² field, a rough estimate is 10 × 600 = 6,000, not an exact count.
The easy-spot trap
A reasonable mistake is to place quadrats where the plants look most abundant or are easiest to reach. Those choices feel efficient, but they bias the estimate: the sample may represent the observer’s preference rather than the habitat.
Monitoring habitats over time
Ecologists sample a woodland, river or coast to detect changes after pollution, drought, fire or restoration. Using the same method each year makes comparisons meaningful, while recording uncertainty prevents a small fluctuation from being mistaken for a real trend.
