How bacterial populations can become harder to treat when antibiotics favour resistant survivors.
Survival changes the population
An antibiotic kills or stops susceptible bacteria, but resistant bacteria may survive and reproduce. Resistance is usually a feature of the bacteria, not something a patient’s body learns during one treatment.
Why it matters
Antibiotics transformed medicine, making many infections treatable. Their overuse or misuse creates more opportunities for resistant bacteria to spread, so a useful medicine can gradually become less reliable.
From one survivor to many
A sample contains 999 susceptible bacteria and 1 resistant bacterium. Treatment removes the 999, while the resistant one divides into 2, then 4, then 8; the next population is mostly resistant.
Antibiotics do not treat viruses
People often expect an antibiotic for any infection because the word sounds like a general medicine. That is understandable, but viruses reproduce inside cells and lack the bacterial structures these drugs target.
Protecting a shared tool
Doctors use laboratory tests and prescribing guidance to choose an effective drug. Taking antibiotics only when needed, exactly as prescribed, and never sharing them helps preserve treatment options for everyone.
