Light-years: measuring cosmic distance — Astronomy, 11–13 years

A light-year is a distance, not a time. It is how far light travels in one year, a useful unit when kilometres become awkwardly enormous.

A distance made from speed and time

Light travels incredibly fast, about 300,000 kilometres every second. A light-year is the distance it covers in one year: about 9.46 trillion kilometres. Saying that a star is four light-years away is a shorter, clearer way to describe a huge distance; it does not mean the star is four years old.

Why invent this unit?

Writing every space distance in kilometres quickly fills a page with zeroes. A unit based on light’s journey is easier to compare and remember. It also connects distance with observation: if a galaxy is one million light-years away, its light took one million years to reach us, so we see it as it was long ago.

How far is one light-year?

Use a simple estimate. Light travels about 300,000 kilometres each second; a year has about 31.5 million seconds. Multiply 300,000 by 31,500,000 and you get roughly 9,450,000,000,000 kilometres. So one light-year is about 9.46 trillion kilometres, even though its name contains the word “year”.

A year that measures distance

Many people first hear “light-year” and think it must measure how long something takes. That is reasonable because “year” normally names a time. Here, “light” tells us the traveller and “year” tells us how long it travels; together they describe the distance covered. Check the unit: it answers “how far?”, not “how long?”.

Reading the past in the sky

Light-years help astronomers understand that telescopes are also time machines. The Moon is about 1.3 light-seconds away, so we see it as it was 1.3 seconds ago; the Sun is about 8 light-minutes away. For distant stars and galaxies, the delay can be years, thousands of years or much more.
