A bigger look
A telescope is a tool that gathers light from faraway objects and sends it to our eyes or a camera. It can make a distant object look larger and reveal details that are too faint or small to notice without help. It does not bring the object closer in space.
Why use one?
Our eyes can collect only a small amount of light, especially from faint objects far away. People built telescopes to gather more light and answer questions about what they could not see clearly. Better views helped observers discover that space contains more worlds and patterns than a quick glance shows.
Galileo’s four moons
In 1610, Galileo pointed a telescope at Jupiter. First he saw three tiny points near it; on another night he saw four. When the points changed places around Jupiter, he realised they were four moons travelling around that planet. The telescope helped him notice what eyes alone had missed.
It does not make space near
A telescope can make a faraway planet look bigger, so it is easy to imagine that the planet has moved closer. That is a reasonable mistake: when a toy is enlarged in a picture, it often seems nearer. The telescope changes the view and collects light, but the huge distance stays the same.
Watching the sky
Astronomers use telescopes on Earth and in space to study planets, clouds of gas and distant galaxies. A telescope can also help people track objects and learn how they move. In an observatory, a science centre or a small backyard, careful looking can turn a bright speck into something with details.
