Digital layers — Art, 11–13
Understand how separate digital layers let you change one part of an image without damaging the others.
Idea
A digital layer is like a clear sheet placed above or below other sheets. You can put the sketch on one layer, flat colours on another and shadows on a third. Each layer can be hidden, moved or edited without automatically changing the pixels on the other layers.
Why it matters
In a single flattened image, painting over the wrong area may destroy marks you still need. Layers solve the problem of risky revision: you can test a background, move a character or recolour a jacket while keeping the rest safe. They became central to digital art because computers can store and combine these separate transparent parts.
Worked example
Create a small digital cat picture with three layers. On layer one, sketch the cat; on layer two, fill its fur with orange; on layer three, add blue spots. Hide the spots layer to compare the plain fur, then recolour it purple. The sketch and orange layer stay unchanged because the colour test happened separately.
Common trap
The common mistake is drawing everything on the first layer because it feels faster. Later, moving the character also moves the background, or changing one colour damages the sketch. This is reasonable: a blank canvas is ready immediately, while planning layers feels like extra work; the benefit appears when revision begins.
Outside school
Layers are used in illustration, photo editing, animation, game art and graphic design. A map can keep roads, labels and satellite images separate; an animator can change a character without repainting every background. When you edit a photo or make a poster, layers let you experiment while keeping earlier decisions available.
