Artist statement — Art, 14–17
An artist statement is a short text that gives viewers a route into a body of work. It explains choices, questions and methods without replacing the need to look at the art.
The idea
An artist statement tells a reader what you are investigating and how the work grew from that investigation. It can name materials, repeated choices or a question, but it does not need to explain every possible meaning. Think of it as a clear invitation into the work, not a secret answer key. The artwork still has to carry its own evidence.
Why it exists
Viewers often meet a group of unfamiliar works without hearing the conversations or decisions behind them. A short statement solves that gap, especially in exhibitions, applications and portfolios where the artist cannot explain everything aloud. It emerged as modern art became less tied to a shared subject or story. The text adds context, but it should not force one reading.
Build one step by step
Start with three photographs of bus stops taken at night. Write the concrete fact: “I photographed empty shelters for two weeks.” Add the question: “How does artificial light make waiting feel public yet lonely?” Name a choice: “I cropped out faces and kept the timetable panels.” Join these ideas into 90 words, then remove claims the images do not support.
The tempting mistake
A common mistake is filling the statement with grand phrases such as “This work explores the human condition.” That sounds serious because art can deal with large questions, but the sentence gives no handle for seeing this particular work. Replace one vague claim with a visible choice, material detail or precise question. Do not invent an intention after the fact just to sound profound.
Where it appears
You may write a statement for a portfolio, exhibition, grant application or end-of-year project. It helps a curator, teacher or collaborator understand what connects separate pieces and what kind of feedback you need. Keep it accurate to the work in front of the reader. A statement cannot repair confusing images, and a clear work can remain strong without a statement.
