Sculpture — Art, 4–6 years
A sculpture is art we can see from more than one side and often walk around. Art, 4–6 years.
What sculpture is
Sculpture is art with space around it, not only marks on a flat page. It may be made from clay, wood, stone, wire or safe recycled objects. You can look at it from different sides and notice its shape, height and balance.
Why make sculpture?
A drawing can show what an object looks like from one view, but it cannot let us walk around it. People made sculptures to show bodies, animals, tools and ideas in solid space. Building in three dimensions solves the problem of showing many sides at once.
Build a clay apple
Take one ball of clay and roll it between your hands. Press it gently to make a round apple shape, then make a small dip at the top. Add a short clay stalk and a leaf. Turn the sculpture as you work so every side keeps its shape.
A common mix-up
It is reasonable to keep looking at the front, because a picture is usually faced one way. In sculpture, the back and sides matter too. If one part becomes thin or heavy, the form may lose balance, so check it by turning it and placing it gently on the table.
Sculpture in daily life
We see sculpture in statues, fountains, playground figures and objects made for a room. Architects and designers make models to test how a building, chair or toy fills space. A sculpture is useful when its shape needs to be understood from different viewpoints.
